24 Places to Eat and Drink in Marbella and Across Andalusia

These are 24 restaurants, cafés and bars I have personally visited and reviewed on Google Maps: 15 in Marbella and nearby, plus 9 worthwhile stops elsewhere on the Costa del Sol and across Andalusia.

They are personal five-star experiences, not an objective ranking. I include what I would order again as well as honest caveats that can help you decide where to eat in Marbella.

Any prices mentioned refer to the date of my visit. Opening status was last checked on 4–5 October 2026, but always verify current hours on Google Maps.

You can also read my broader Marbella restaurant guide. This newer article focuses on documented personal reviews and my own photos.

Choose by what you feel like eating

  • Brunch in Nueva Andalucía: Paisana offers consistent food and a great view; the terrace can become very hot.
  • Matcha in Elviria: Aüra Café served one of my best matchas in the area, although the menu is small.
  • Sushi in Elviria: Fujiumi impressed me with fresh fish and foie gras nigiri; the interior is simple.
  • Beachfront cocktails: Trocadero Zanzíbar delivers the view and atmosphere; check the current name and concept before visiting.
  • Cannelloni in Torremolinos: Tiki is creative and flavourful, but service and the bathroom can disappoint.
  • Sunset in Tarifa: Carbones 13 offered kind service and fair prices when I visited.

1. Rachel’s Eco Love Grab & Go

Nueva Andalucía · Café · My rating: 5/5
Google review: Updated 2 days ago (accessed 2026-10-02).

I have visited Rachel’s on and off for years, including four recent visits. The setting beside a busy car park near Hard Rock Hotel sounds unlikely, yet the plants, Bali-style parasols and carefully presented food make this a surprisingly attractive café. The ham-and-cheese croissant, matcha, smoothies, bowls and wraps have generally been very good.

I ordered the beef wrap three times. On the first visit it was excellent and generously filled with meat; on another there appeared to be roughly half as much filling. It still tasted good, but at this price level I expect more consistent portions. Prices also vary significantly by order. My girlfriend’s granola, egg and coffee cost around €15, while my croissant, beef wrap and matcha came close to €40 during another visit. Both amounts are historical visit prices.

Service is my main reservation. One employee has consistently been warm and helpful, while other interactions felt indifferent. I still return for the food, design and pleasant terrace, but expect traffic noise, limited indoor seating and early closing hours.

2. Paisana Marbella – Cookhouse & Coffee

Nueva Andalucía · Café and brunch · My rating: 5/5
Google review: one hour ago (accessed 2026-10-05).

After around four years and many visits, Paisana remains one of my favourite places in Nueva Andalucía. The Centro Plaza terrace has a view I never tire of, and the food has been consistently good.

My regular choice is the sweet-potato waffle. The coffee is good, and the menu includes poached eggs and plenty of breakfast and lunch options, with some organic ingredients. Service is friendly and usually efficient.

The terrace can become very hot, prices are on the high side and parking beneath Centro Plaza can add to the bill. During busy periods I sometimes pay at the counter rather than wait for the bill. Despite those caveats, the consistency, atmosphere and view keep bringing us back.

3. Aüra Café

Elviria · Café · My rating: 5/5
Google review: 2 days ago (accessed 2026-10-02).

Aüra is a small, beautifully designed café in Elviria with a Scandinavian feel and clear attention to detail. I especially appreciate the option of coconut milk and honey instead of sugar.

The matcha was possibly the best I had tried in the area at the time: recognisably good matcha rather than an overly sweet drink. The morning coffee was excellent too, and the staff were welcoming. The menu is limited, but I found it more interesting than many nearby cafés.

Quality came at a slightly higher price. My iced coffee with coconut milk and honey cost €5 during that visit, and Aüra felt more expensive than many cafés nearby. For me, the quality and attention to detail justified it.

4. Kafein Coffee & Kitchen

central Marbella · Café · My rating: 5/5
Google review: one week ago (accessed 2026-10-02).

Kafein is a useful central Marbella stop when you want proper filter coffee, coconut milk and honey instead of sugar. The cake display offers plenty of choice, including the pistachio éclair and fruit-topped pastries shown in my photos. My review is brief, but the combination of coffee options and pastries earned a personal 5/5.

5. ZANZIBAR Marbella Cocktail Bar

Playa de Río Real · Beach bar · My rating: 5/5
Google review: 3 months ago (accessed 2026-10-02).

The beach, view and atmosphere almost made me want to move in. ZANZIBAR was simply a dreamlike place to sit, with good music and a whiskey sour that made the experience even better.

I was enthusiastic about the changes the then-new owner had made and already looked forward to bringing more friends. The group’s official website currently presents the venue as Trocadero Zanzíbar, while my Google Maps review appears under ZANZIBAR Marbella Cocktail Bar.

6. De Juan Marbella | Gastrobar

central Marbella · Gastrobar · My rating: 5/5
Google review: one year ago (accessed 2026-10-02).

De Juan felt cosy, with attentive waiters and genuinely service-minded staff. The food was good, and at the time I considered the price fair for Marbella. If the restaurant maintains that balance of quality and service, it has the ingredients to become a reliable place to revisit.

7. Restaurante Japonés – TOKYO

central Marbella · Sushi · My rating: 5/5
Google review: 2 years ago (accessed 2026-10-02).

TOKYO was a pleasant surprise in a busy tourist area. The sushi was genuinely good, with moist, well-seasoned rice, and the food arrived quickly. Service was sweet and the music stayed at a comfortable level. I would happily return when I want sushi in central Marbella.

8. EL BALCÓN DE LA VIRGEN

central Marbella · Restaurant · My rating: 5/5
Google review: 3 years ago (accessed 2026-10-02).

We held a farewell dinner here for a group of ten. The staff were exceptionally kind, the meat was good and the evening worked well for the whole group.

The pizza was the one weak point on our visit, although we may simply have been unlucky, and cocktails were not available. Everything else left a very positive impression.

9. Restaurante Tanino San Pedro

San Pedro Alcántara · Restaurant · My rating: 5/5
Google review: 3 years ago (accessed 2026-10-02).

At Tanino I almost wanted to order the entire menu. The food was delicious, and the staff paid close attention to my dietary needs at the time, helping ensure that my meal contained neither dairy nor tomato after I explained my allergies.

The waiters were kind and the music contributed to a good evening. Some of my friends visited often at the time because the varied menu gave them something different to try. After my own visit, I understood why.

10. Maï Sushi

Guadalmina Alta · Sushi · My rating: 5/5
Google review: 3 years ago (accessed 2026-10-02).

Maï served the best sushi I had eaten in the Marbella area during the previous two years. The fish and rice were excellent, service was warm and child-friendly, and the desserts were unexpectedly memorable.

The room is not large, but it is pleasant, and parking was easy during our visit. Expect lively pop and radio music rather than a traditionally Japanese soundtrack.

My visit to Trattoria L’Impronta was straightforwardly excellent: very good food, attentive service and an enjoyable meal with friends. My original review is short, but the overall experience was strong enough for a personal 5/5.

12. The Garden by La Rosa

Atalaya, Estepona · Restaurant · My rating: 5/5
Google review: 4 years ago (accessed 2026-10-02).

The Garden by La Rosa was always a pleasure to revisit. I knew the owners through a friend, which is relevant context, and experienced them as warm, funny and good at making us feel at home. Favourite dishes included foie gras, empanadillas, steaks and salmon, and the amaretto sour was good too.

Summer evenings outside were especially pleasant. Our dog Franco could join us and had become familiar with both the owners and the atmosphere. These visits combined good food with good company.

13. Fujiumi Elviria

Elviria · Sushi and Japanese food · My rating: 5/5
Google review: Updated 4 years ago (accessed 2026-10-02).

Fujiumi became a place I returned to. I ate there twice initially because I had slept so little before the first visit that I did not feel able to judge it fairly. The second visit impressed me with friendly, professional service and memorable fish and seafood.

After eating there over the following year without disappointment, the salmon sashimi still won my heart every time. The salmon-and-papaya salad was excellent, the gyoza were good, and the foie gras nigiri was the highlight: I ordered one, then two more, then another two.

You can sit inside or outside, and the open doors create a pleasant feel. To me, the simple interior suits good food with friends better than a romantic date. I liked the Japanese atmosphere and music. The desserts were the exception: they did not impress me, and I wanted a more exciting ending to such a strong meal.

14. Breathe

Nueva Andalucía near Puerto Banús · Restaurant · My rating: 5/5
Google review: 4 years ago (accessed 2026-10-02).

Breathe made a strong impression on me. I ordered carpaccio, avocado guacamole, pulled pork and a mango dessert, and the flavours, textures and presentation genuinely surprised me. After that evening, I called it my new favourite place in Puerto Banús.

The interior was beautiful and felt Nordic to me. The fountain, music and relaxed atmosphere worked well together, and service was efficient. Because of my allergies, I needed to ask about ingredients as usual. I wanted to return and see whether a second visit would reach the same level.

Hacienda Patagónica served the best food we had in central Marbella during that 14-day stay. It tasted so good that we forgot to photograph the dishes before eating them. Service was friendly too. This is a concise review, but the meal itself was an easy recommendation.

16. Tiki

Torremolinos · Restaurant · My rating: 5/5
Google review: Updated 2 days ago (accessed 2026-10-02).

The oxtail cannelloni was so good that I ordered it again instead of dessert. After our third visit, I seriously wondered whether Tiki was my favourite restaurant between Marbella and Málaga. The meat was exceptionally tender, but the rich sauce—reminiscent to me of foie gras and cognac—made the dish. Tiki’s sauces repeatedly made me want to wipe the plate clean.

We also shared tender octopus and meat on the bone that could almost be cut with a fork, served with cassava fries, onion and a fresh lime dressing. On an earlier visit, the parmesan scallops and sushi were also very good. Ordering several dishes to share is the best way to experience the menu. Cocktails, lounge and jazz music and the intimate atmosphere worked well together; on several visits we were offered complimentary mojitos.

Tiki also has clear weaknesses. The restaurant was so dark that I struggled to read the menu, and the staff would not increase the lighting. The low lounge chairs were uncomfortable for me as a tall man and for my then-pregnant girlfriend, although the staff found us a better table. On the latest two visits it was difficult to attract a waiter’s attention even with few guests. They were friendly when they arrived, but should have been more attentive.

The men’s toilet was tiny, black and so dark that a phone torch was almost necessary. Poor soundproofing, tables nearby and missing hand soap on the latest visit also detracted from the experience. The brownie was more like chocolate cake than a brownie, and we would have preferred vanilla ice cream to coconut. The food—especially the cannelloni and sauces—is what brings us back.

17. ANGUS Torrequebrada

Benalmádena · Steakhouse · My rating: 5/5
Google review: one year ago (accessed 2026-10-02).

A 500 g entrecôte was the highlight at ANGUS Torrequebrada. The meat was excellent, the portion large enough to take some home, and the flake salt was a small but important plus for me at a steakhouse.

The sides were more uneven. The pil-pil prawns were acceptable, but I missed the taste of olive oil and enough salt. The fresh bread worked well with the prawns. The truffle fries tasted good, although I wanted more cheese and crispness; several were too soft, while the crispy ones were genuinely good.

The location was lovely, and the 1980s and 1990s music suited me perfectly. Parking was paid during my visit. I also appreciated being welcomed for lunch at 13:00 even though I was the only guest. Come for the steak—it made the strongest impression.

18. La Pergola Ristorante – La Cala de Mijas

La Cala de Mijas · Italian restaurant · My rating: 5/5
Google review: 4 years ago (accessed 2026-10-02).

Truffle risotto, pizza, burrata salad, two pasta dishes and a children’s pizza gave us a broad taste of La Pergola’s menu. The food was very good, portions were large, and the leftovers still tasted delicious the next day.

The interior felt authentic. Staff spoke good English, checked on the food and helped with my allergy requirements. I ordered several dishes without cheese or dairy. My pizza was so soft and tasty that I asked again whether it contained ordinary cheese; according to the staff, it did not.

Two reservations are worth knowing. Tables were tightly arranged, and one guest actually knocked over a table and a lamp. A small risotto was also charged at the large-portion price. When I pointed out the mistake, the staff corrected it and refunded the difference. I especially recommended the restaurant to adults and families with older children.

We were initially disappointed by the limited menu at Gastro-Bar MK in Ronda. Then the food arrived. The meat and tuna were genuinely good, and the restaurant positively surprised us.

I gave both food and service 5/5, while atmosphere received 3/5. The meal and service were what lifted the overall experience to five stars.

Good restaurants can feel difficult to find in Coín, which made Pepe Pizza a welcome discovery. The burgers and pizzas were tasty, the music relaxed and the service kind. It is not a fancy venue, but it delivered exactly the enjoyable, uncomplicated meal we wanted.

21. El Orejas Cocinalenta

Granada · Restaurant · My rating: 5/5
Google review: one year ago (accessed 2026-10-02).

El Orejas in Granada delivered on food, music and service. The staff spoke good English, and even the bread and olive oil made me happy. The meat was the real reason to remember the visit: I could choose the type and have the amount I wanted cut for me. The flavour was excellent.

I experienced my steak ordered “al punto” as closer to medium-rare than the medium I had imagined, so next time I would explain precisely how I want it cooked. I arrived as late as 23:15 that evening and the kitchen was still open, which I greatly appreciated.

22. ZOCO PALMAR

El Palmar de Vejer · Food market · My rating: 5/5
Google review: one year ago (accessed 2026-10-02).

ZOCO had become a popular local meeting place after Homies closed. The atmosphere was lively, the music good and the staff kind. Food was better than I often expect from sunset-focused beach venues. For a relaxed evening in El Palmar, it offered the essentials: local energy, food and a memorable sunset.

Carbones 13 gave us exceptionally kind service and a good piña colada. We arrived only ten minutes before closing while the restaurant was fully booked, yet received the final table and watched the sunset.

Prices felt very fair at the time of our visit. We even underpaid by mistake, and the staff simply told us we could settle it next time. That relaxed generosity, together with the view, made us want to return.

How I selected these places

Every place is based on my own visit and personal 5/5 review. I have returned to several of them many times, including Paisana and Fujiumi. The 18 restaurant photos are my own; the featured image is an AI-generated editorial illustration. The numbers are for navigation, not a ranking.

An honest update about Zozoï

Zozoï had been one of my favourites for around four years. I loved the atmosphere in Marbella Old Town, and for a long time enjoyed its tapas, above-average food and usually fast, friendly service. In my view, the steaks had been better one or two years earlier, but there was still plenty to return for.

My latest visit changed the picture. We received a table after about eight minutes, but then waited 57 minutes before we could even order drinks. After another 16 minutes, half the drinks order was still missing. The food took roughly another 40 minutes. The restaurant was extremely busy and appeared one or two waiters short, so I understand that the team was under pressure.

I stayed because I know several staff members almost as good acquaintances and kept expecting the evening to improve. It was my girlfriend’s first visit to a place I had praised so highly, which made the experience embarrassing.

The bread and butter I love—and had ordered at the start—arrived only after the main course, almost like an unwanted dessert. My steak, one of the more expensive dishes, was ordered medium/pink but arrived completely well done and dry. After waiting close to two hours, I did not have the energy to send it back and start again. We were not charged for the bread, which I appreciated, but it did not rescue the evening.

Two friends who had also been regular customers had already stopped visiting. After this evening, I understood them better. Four years of good experiences do not disappear because of one night, but I can no longer recommend Zozoï as warmly. I hope it returns to the standard that made us regulars.

DG Café Puerto Banús: Is the Dolce & Gabbana Bar Worth Visiting?

I am not particularly interested in designer clothes. Yet a spontaneous stop at DG Café in Puerto Banús gave me a genuinely pleasant break above the marina—with coffee, playful Italian design and a blue sea just beyond the terrace.

The official name is DG Martini® Puerto Banús. It sits above the Dolce & Gabbana boutique, so this is less a traditional neighbourhood café and more a small taste of the polished Puerto Banús lifestyle.

My short verdict: visit if you enjoy fashion, people-watching, marina views and a slightly posh atmosphere. If you mainly want the best-value coffee in Marbella, this is probably not the place I would choose first.

At a glanceWhat to know
Official nameDG Martini® Puerto Banús
LocationAbove the Dolce & Gabbana boutique at Club de Mar, Muelle de Honor
Best forSea views, designer surroundings and a polished afternoon drink
Age groupThe daytime café experience can be enjoyed by adults, older visitors and families; it is not specifically a children’s attraction
My verdictA pleasant experience if you like the posh side of Puerto Banús

What is DG Café in Puerto Banús?

Dolce & Gabbana describes the venue as Bar Martini®, housed on the first floor above its Puerto Banús boutique and overlooking the terrace. That is exactly the appeal: you are visiting a fashion-branded bar and café in one of the Costa del Sol’s most famous luxury marinas—not a quiet independent coffee shop hidden in a side street.

The official listing currently shows food and drinks and daily opening hours from 14:00 to 23:00. Hours can change with the season, so check the official Dolce & Gabbana page before making a special trip.

DG coffee and cookie with a sea view in Puerto Banús
Coffee, a small sweet bite and the marina view: the simple part of an otherwise very styled experience.

My honest experience—even without an interest in designer fashion

I did not visit because I wanted to buy a new designer wardrobe. I am simply not that interested in labels. Puerto Banús, however, has a talent for turning an ordinary walk into theatre: yachts, polished shopfronts, dramatic interiors and people who look as if they planned their sunglasses three days in advance.

Against that background, DG Café made sense. I enjoyed the contrast between the colourful, deliberately extravagant boutique and the relaxed view from the terrace. Once seated with the sea in front of me, it felt less like shopping and more like taking a short break inside a carefully designed film set.

Is DG Café suitable for all ages?

Yes, in the sense that the daytime experience does not require you to be young, fashionable or part of the nightlife crowd. Couples, friends, parents with children and older visitors can all enjoy a drink and the view. The lift and exact accessibility arrangements should still be confirmed with the venue if that matters for your visit.

It is important to set expectations: this is a designer bar and café, not a child-focused activity centre. Families may enjoy a short daytime stop, while the later atmosphere naturally leans more towards cocktails and the grown-up Puerto Banús scene.

The menu and the luxury factor

The menu covers coffee and other drinks as well as cocktails and champagne. The setting is part of what you are paying for, so I would arrive expecting Puerto Banús luxury pricing rather than a bargain café. I have included my photographs of the menu for context, but use them as a snapshot from my visit—not a permanent price list.

The bar and boutique are part of the experience

The visual identity continues from the bar into the boutique. Even if you do not intend to buy anything, the strong colours and theatrical displays make the walk through the building more memorable than the average coffee stop. This is precisely why I would recommend it only to visitors who enjoy the polished, slightly extravagant side of Marbella.

Who should visit—and who should skip it?

Visit if you like

  • Designer fashion and theatrical interiors
  • Marina views and people-watching
  • A polished setting for coffee or cocktails
  • Taking photographs in a colourful, recognisable location

Skip it if you want

  • The cheapest coffee in the area
  • A quiet local café away from luxury tourism
  • A child-centred attraction with activities
  • An experience completely unrelated to branding

Five other well-rated cafés and stylish stops in Puerto Banús

If the Dolce & Gabbana setting is not quite your style—or you simply want more options—these five places are worth putting on your shortlist. The Google Maps ratings and review counts below were checked on 17 September 2026. Ratings change, and Google’s café categories are not always consistent, so treat this as a useful snapshot rather than a permanent league table.

PlaceGoogle MapsWhy consider it?
FFcoffee4.9 (309 reviews)A highly rated sweet stop for coffee, crêpes, desserts, smoothies and colourful presentation.
Origins Brunch & Drinks5.0 (39 reviews)A newer brunch option with a perfect score but a much smaller review base.
Box Kitchen Marbella4.6 (85 reviews)A casual café in Banús Marina Mall with brunch-style food and coffee.
Rosas Café Marbella4.5 (1,714 reviews)Pretty, polished and very popular for breakfast, pastries and brunch near Puerto Banús.
LaLaLa Puerto Banús4.5 (1,559 reviews)An all-day marina restaurant and café with a glamorous setting, views and a lively evening atmosphere.

For pure luxury atmosphere, I would look first at Rosas Café and LaLaLa. For the strongest rating, FFcoffee stands out, while Origins is promising but still has far fewer reviews.

Practical tips before you go

  • Check the current opening hours. The official DG listing currently shows 14:00–23:00 daily, but seasonal changes are possible.
  • Go for the setting. The marina view and design are the main reasons to visit.
  • Do not expect a budget café. You are in Puerto Banús and inside a designer concept.
  • Daytime is the easiest option for families. Later hours are more bar-oriented.
  • Allow time for a walk. The marina, yachts and surrounding boutiques are part of the same experience.

My final verdict on DG Café Puerto Banús

I still have not become a designer-clothes enthusiast. But I did enjoy DG Café.

The coffee stop worked because I accepted it for what it is: a polished, branded experience in a marina built around luxury. The sea view was lovely, the surroundings were fun to explore, and the atmosphere made an ordinary break feel a little more special.

Would I cross the Costa del Sol solely for the coffee? Probably not. Would I stop again while walking around Puerto Banús? Yes—especially with someone who enjoys fashion, design or the posh Marbella lifestyle.

Free Printable Family Calendar: Weekly Planner for the Whole Family

Keeping a family organised can feel like running a small logistics office. Who has practice? Who is doing the school run? What are we eating—and why is there another mystery bag in the hallway?

Download this free printable family calendar and give everyone one clear view of the week. It has no year and no fixed dates, so you can reuse the same design week after week.

Reusable printable family calendar with weekly columns and colour markers
The reusable family calendar is ready to print and use again every week.

Download the free printable family calendar

Download the family calendar as a PDF

The calendar is designed for A4 paper in landscape orientation. It includes:

  • all seven days from Monday to Sunday
  • four columns where you add family members’ names
  • a wide shared section for dinner, pickups and family plans
  • blank dates, so the planner never expires

How to print it correctly

  1. Open the PDF file.
  2. Choose A4 and landscape orientation.
  3. Select “Fit to page” if your printer cuts off the edges.
  4. Print in colour if you like, although the design also works in black and white.

To save paper, place the sheet in a clear plastic sleeve or laminate it. Use a whiteboard marker, wipe it clean on Sunday evening and start again. It is almost like getting your life organised—just in A4.

A family planner only works when everyone can see it

Put the calendar somewhere the family already passes every day: on the refrigerator, beside the dining table or in the hallway. A beautiful plan at the bottom of a drawer is still just paper.

Choose one regular time each week to fill it in together. Ten minutes on Sunday can prevent a surprising number of “you never told me” conversations.

What should you add to the weekly family plan?

  • work hours and work-from-home days
  • school, childcare and activities
  • who is dropping off and picking up
  • doctor, dentist and other appointments
  • birthdays and social plans
  • dinner ideas and leftover nights
  • practical jobs that otherwise land with the same person

Use colours without turning it into an art project

Give each person one colour, or use colours by type: blue for work, green for school, red for appointments and black for shared plans. Keep the system simple. If the colour code needs its own instruction manual, the calendar has already lost.

Combine the paper planner with a digital calendar

Paper is excellent for the shared overview. Your phone is better at reminders. Use them together:

  1. Put fixed and time-critical appointments in your digital calendar.
  2. Copy the week’s most important events to the family sheet.
  3. Take a photo of the completed page, so the plan travels with you.

Frequently asked questions

Is the family calendar really free?

Yes. You may download and print it for personal use.

Why is there no year on the calendar?

Because the template should work next week, next month and next year. Simply write the week number or dates at the top.

Can people other than families use it?

Yes. The columns also work for housemates, small teams, co-parenting schedules or different types of tasks.

Can I edit the PDF on a computer?

It is primarily designed for printing and handwriting. You can also use a PDF app with text or annotation tools if you prefer to fill it in digitally.

System Data Taking Up Space on Mac? Free Storage Safely

Short answer: System Data on a Mac is not one folder you can safely delete. It is a category for files macOS does not place elsewhere, including caches, logs, app data, local snapshots and temporary files. Start with Apple’s built-in storage view and files you recognise. Do not delete random folders from System or Library.

Updated September 2026 for current macOS storage guidance. Menu names can vary slightly by macOS version.

Before you clean up: make a backup

If free space is critically low, pause large downloads and system upgrades until you have created some breathing room. Connect an external drive and make a Time Machine backup, or confirm that your irreplaceable documents exist in another independent location.

A synchronisation service is not always a separate backup. If a deletion synchronises, the file may disappear from more than one device.

1. Check what is actually using the space

In recent macOS versions, choose Apple menu → System Settings → General → Storage. Give macOS time to calculate the categories, then inspect Documents, Applications, Messages and the other sections with an information button.

System Data can change while macOS reclassifies files. Restart the Mac, wait a few minutes and check again before treating the number as permanent.

2. Empty Trash — including Recently Deleted

Deleted files normally release their space only after Trash is emptied. Also check Recently Deleted in Photos and any trash or deleted-items folders inside Mail and other apps. Review the contents first; recovery may be difficult afterwards.

3. Clean Downloads and old installers

Open Downloads in Finder, use list view and sort by size. Old .dmg and .pkg installers, archives, duplicate downloads and videos are often the safest quick wins. Delete only files you recognise, or move them temporarily to an external drive.

4. Uninstall applications correctly

Use the Storage view to sort applications by size and last-used date. Some professional apps include their own uninstaller, which may also remove helper components. Follow the developer’s instructions instead of hunting through Library folders.

5. Find large files and device backups

Videos, screen recordings, virtual machines, music libraries and old iPhone or iPad backups can consume many gigabytes. Review them through Storage or Finder. Move archives to an appropriate external drive and keep a second backup of anything irreplaceable.

6. Use iCloud optimisation with open eyes

Optimise Mac Storage can keep fewer full-size files locally and download originals when required. It can free space, but it depends on enough iCloud capacity and an internet connection when a file must be restored. Read the settings before enabling it, and do not rely on a single copy of important data.

7. Understand local Time Machine snapshots

On APFS volumes, Time Machine can keep local snapshots when the backup disk is not connected. Apple explains that macOS removes snapshots as space is needed and usually counts that space as available. If snapshots appear to be involved, connect the Time Machine disk and let a normal backup finish.

Avoid aggressive Terminal commands copied from an unknown cleanup guide. Snapshots are part of your ability to recover earlier versions of files.

8. Restart — or temporarily use Safe Mode

A normal restart may clear temporary files and end processes that are holding storage. If you need just enough space to complete an update, Apple notes that starting in Safe Mode can clear certain system caches that macOS recreates when needed. The startup method differs between Apple silicon and Intel Macs, so follow Apple’s instructions for your model.

9. Review Mail, Messages and creative apps

Large attachments, old conversations, video render files, music-production libraries and downloaded cloud folders can be counted in or around System Data. Use each app’s own controls to remove downloads, caches and generated files when available.

10. System Data on Mac: what you should not delete manually

  • Folders inside /System.
  • Unknown files inside /Library or your user Library.
  • Snapshots, databases or containers using Terminal commands you do not understand.
  • Your Photos library before verifying its location and backup.
  • Everything a “cleaner” labels unnecessary without reviewing it yourself.

A safe order when your startup disk is almost full

  1. Stop large downloads and updates.
  2. Back up important files.
  3. Review and empty Trash.
  4. Remove recognised large files from Downloads.
  5. Move videos and archives to an external drive.
  6. Uninstall unused apps correctly.
  7. Restart and check Storage again.

When to ask for help

Get help if System Data returns immediately after cleanup, the Mac cannot start, the category is extremely large with no clear cause, or you cannot distinguish system files from your own data. You can book Mac help with MacGeni, use remote support if the Mac starts and has internet access, or read about Mac repair when a drive problem is suspected.

Frequently asked questions

Can I delete System Data on a Mac?

Not as one category. You can reduce it by removing known unnecessary files and using individual apps’ cleanup controls. The category also contains necessary macOS and app data.

How much free space should I keep?

There is no single official number for every user. Keep enough for your largest normal tasks and macOS updates. If you repeatedly fall to only a few free gigabytes, your workflow or drive size is too tight.

Do I need a Mac cleaning app?

No. Many safe cleanups use tools built into macOS. Third-party apps can be convenient, but they do not replace a backup and should not delete unknown system files without your review.
